Hanshiro Tsugumo, a wandering samurai (ronin) arrives at the gates of the Clan LYI fortress asking to die there. But before the rite of seppukku is carried out, he insists on telling his story ... Through this Jidai-deki (Japanese historical film) made in 1962 Kobayashi dissects the rules and principles governing military life of their supposed nobility to reveal rigidity and denounces the indifference of its adepts in the face of human distress.
